The payment index for the UK building trades · running since 2014

Every firm here
carries its own
payment record.

Two thousand three hundred and eighty contractors, subcontractors and consultants, each shown with how long they take to settle a subcontractor's invoice and how much retention they have actually released. The trade knows these numbers already. Until now it only ever knew them in the pub.

  • 2,380 firms indexed
  • Payment days on every card
  • Retention release tracked

Where the figures come from

Numbers a firm would rather you did not have

01

The payment days come from the people who waited

Subcontractors send us dated applications and remittances, we strip out anything we cannot see both ends of, and we publish the median rather than the average so one catastrophic invoice cannot smear a decent firm. Fourteen contractors have asked to be removed since we started. The entry stays, with a line saying they asked.

02

Retention released is the figure that hurts

Any firm can pay a valuation quickly and still sit on five per cent for three years. So we track what proportion of retention has actually reached the subcontractor twelve months after practical completion, which is the number that turned our friendliest entries hostile.

03

No main contractor may advertise here

The only firms with money to spend on this page are the ones whose figures we publish, which makes advertising impossible to take honestly. We turned down £31,500 of it last year and run the index on subscriptions from quantity surveyors instead.

04

When we get it wrong we print that too

We have corrected nine records in three years, twice after a firm proved our sample was drawn from one bad contract rather than its normal trading. Those corrections sit on the entry permanently, next to the original figure, which is more embarrassing for us than quietly editing the page would be.

A site manager going through paperwork on a tailgate at the end of the day

“We were owed £41,800 of retention on a school job and eleven months of asking had got me a shrug. I looked the main contractor up here, saw they were releasing about a third of retention across everyone, and priced the next two tenders with that in mind instead of hoping. I lost one and won the other at a number that survives them paying late.”

About this page

Everything above is a demonstration

The business, the listings and the reviews are invented — this page exists to show what someone could put on buildingindustry.co.uk. The domain itself is genuinely for sale.

Domain for sale

buildingindustry.co.uk is available

You are looking at a demonstration, not a real business. We built it to show what this domain could carry — the company, the stock and the reviews are invented.

  1. 1

    Make an enquiry

Tell us who you are and what you would use it for. It costs nothing and puts you under no obligation.

  2. 2

    Agree a price

We reply with a price or consider your offer. Most conversations are settled within a couple of working days.

  3. 3

    Pay into escrow

Funds go to a licensed third-party escrow agent, never straight to us. They hold the money until the transfer is confirmed.

  4. 4

    Take ownership

We push the authorisation code to your registrar. You control the domain, usually within a week; escrow then releases the funds.

The demonstration site is not part of the sale by default — but if you want it, say so in your enquiry and we will include the source.
